I just started reading a collection of short stories called “The Boat” by Nam Le. He is a Vietnamese-born, Australian-bred grad of the esteemed Iowa Writer’s Workshop. I read a story of his years ago and have been waiting for his book to come out ever since. Well, it was worth the wait: His cultural repetoire is stunning, the stories are clearly written, heart-wrenching, and fresh. Highly recommended if you enjoy short stories like I do!
Loved Animal, Vegetable, Mineral. Have you read “Plenty” by Alisa Smith and J.B. Mackinnon? Another Eat Local book.
I’m currently reading “Waiting for Birdy” by Catherine Newman, best baby book since “Operating Instructions” by Anne Lamott, my first Bookcrossings book.
Thank you for the recommendations. I have read “Plenty,” which is another great eating local book. I will have read “Waiting for Birdy” and “The Boat.” Thanks!
Waiting for Birdy looks wonderful! I can’t wait to read it.
Thank you for the “Kabul Beauty School” recommendation. I loved it! I read it in a few days- I couldn’t wait for the baby’s bed time to read. I am now starting “Waiting for Birdy”. Just from reading the intro, it sounds great! I’ll let you know my final verdict
Other Kingsolver books: The Bean Trees and The Poisonwood Bible. The latter she wrote from 5 different perspectives. She actually wrote the ENTIRE book from ALL 5 and then chose her favorite parts of each to piece together the story. It’s remarkable.
Thanks for your recommendations. I love A Thousand Splendid Suns as well!
The Red Tent by Anita Daimant
Disappearing Acts by Jodi Picoult (ok everything by Jodi Picoult)
Cat’s Eye by Margaret Atwood (I see you are already a fan)
