Check out Ms. Single Mama’s great post about Play-Doh.
We haven’t introduced Play-Doh into our house yet. I’m afraid at 18-months-old, my daughter will just eat it. Now, I’m scared of the mess I will be facing! But life with kids is messy…
Check out the great comments left by all the readers. Looks like I will be buying some cookie cutters!

We haven’t played with Play-Doh yet in our house. We went to a play group that had edible, homemade play dough. The baby was probably about 18 months. She didn’t try to eat it but more interested in watching the big kids play with it. I will probably have to try it again soon. At least she can still go in the high chair and we can contain the mess!
I have been wanting to try a homemade play-doh recipe. At least that way if she eats it, I know what she is eating! Putting her in the high chair is a great way to confine the mess. The other trick I’ve heard is letting them have a binky to stop them from eating the play-doh.
I would say I’m a pretty permissive parent, but there is one rule I absolutely insist on and that is NO PLAY-DOH! I just can’t stand the smell of it and I also hate the mess it makes and how you find little nuggets of Play-doh in your carpet and furniture years after the children have moved out and gone to college.
If they discover it at a friends house or school, fine, as long as they wash their hands afterwards. I don’t think my children are suffering irreparable harm for being without it.
My playdough favorite :
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
2 Tab. oil
2 tsp. cream of tarter
1 cup water
food coloring
Cook and stir constantly until mashed potato consistency. It should pull away form sides of pan. Knead and store in covered container.
My kids who are grown mothers on their own now used to love this rainy day activity. It’s great practice for making holidy cookies.
Wow Jim, you are tough with the Play-Doh. I totally understand though. It definitely has a strange smell. I suspect your kids with grow-up just fine without playing with it. Nancy – Thanks for the recipe. I will definitely have to make that recipe. Maybe the homemade Play-Doh will smell better?
It is stinky – but I loved Play-DOH SO Much, could never deprive Benjamin of it … I have yet to make it myself thought.
